DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted to learn how colonials obtained their land? This program discusses land boundaries and frontiers and how that established land grants and tracts. Various types of rights to claim land in colonial times will be explained. \n\n\n\nNonna Daleen Good is a native of Clarke County\, Virginia and currently lives in the Shenandoah Valley. She specializes in genealogical records in the northwestern areas of Virginia. She has been conducting genealogical research since the 1980s. Nonna has been the Registrar for the Narrow Passage Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for 9 years. She has conducted genealogy workshops and presentations to many Virginia and Nebraska DAR Daughters. She has transcribed records and submitted articles for the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy. Nonna is a veteran of the United States Air Force serving during the Iranian Hostage Crisis and Grenada. She is a current member of the DAR\, National Society US Daughters of 1812\, Descendants of the Mexican American War\, Descendants of American Prisoners of War\, National Society Descendants of American Railroad Workers\, and the Hereditary Order of the Signers of the Bush Declaration. It also includes an introduction to the newly digitized WW2 Army Morning Reports. \n\n\n\nWar Workers on the Homefront \n\n\n\nLearn how the mobilization of war workers impacted our ancestors and their communities. Special attention is given to researching the contributions of female family members to the war effort. \n\n\n\nLife After the War \n\n\n\nOur ancestors’ WW2 experience didn’t end with the war. This session explores how to research and gain insights into the postwar life of veterans and their families. \n\n\n\nLeveraging Newspapers for WW2 Research \n\n\n\nNewspapers are the thread that ties together our research. They provide clues\, context\, and clarity for understanding the wartime (and postwar) experiences of our ancestors. Case study examples illustrate the value of fully leveraging this amazing resource. \n\n\n\nKB Barcomb specializes in World War I and World War II records\, resources\, and research methodology. Her focus is on understanding the chronology and context of military records\, so as to more accurately interpret and analyze their content. \n\n\n\nShe is passionate about sharing the many nuances and details discoverable in service and war-era records. She has taught classes for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG)\, co-taught the course Researching U.S. Ancestors: 1917-1930 for the Genealogy Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP)\, and taught a course on WWI research for the Applied Genealogy Institute. \n\n\n\nKB has conducted onsite research at National Archives I & II\, the National Archives at Atlanta and Kansas City\, the US Army Heritage and Education Center\, the Air Force Historical Research Agency\, the National WWI Museum\, the National Security Agency Museum\, the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum plus various state and university archives. She is a retired US Army officer with over 20 years active service\, a self-acknowledged history nerd\, and the late-in-life daughter of two WWII veterans. DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores the rich and complex history of Red Hill\, the final home and burial site of Founding Father Patrick Henry. We’ll trace Henry’s influential life as a fiery orator and advocate for liberty\, best known for his iconic declaration\, “Give me liberty\, or give me death!” Beyond his public legacy\, we’ll delve into his private life at Red Hill\, including his family and the plantation he managed. \n\n\n\nThe program will also shed light on the lives of the enslaved people who lived and labored at Red Hill\, acknowledging their contributions and the harsh realities they endured. Additionally\, we will examine the Indigenous presence in the region before and during European settlement\, highlighting the often-overlooked narratives that shaped the land’s deeper history. \n\n\n\nCody Youngblood is an architectural historian and the Director of Preservation & Collections at Patrick Henry’s Red Hill. He holds a B.A. in Historic Preservation and Museum Studies from the University of Mary Washington and an M.A. in the Conservation of Historic Buildings from the University of York. He has formerly served as Museum Director of George C. Marshall’s Dodona Manor and Collections Manager at Oatlands Historic House & Gardens in Leesburg\, Virginia\, where he led significant reinterpretation and refurnishing projects. \n\n\n\nAt Red Hill\, Cody stewards a collection of nearly 3\,000 artifacts and manages the preservation of its historic built environment.
